The Italian Parish of Indianapolis
B envenuto! Welcome to Holy Rosary
Church! Whether you are a lifelong
parishioner, a first-time visitor to our
parish, or someone in between, we
are grateful you have joined us today.
Founded in 1909 as the Italian Parish of
Indianapolis, we continue to serve as
the parish home of people of Italian
heritage and also embrace all Catholics
in union with Rome, including those
devoted to the Traditional Latin Mass
(Extraordinary Form) and the Anglican
Usage of the Roman Rite.
In the words of our founding pastor,
Msgr. Marino Priori:
“The church is the temple of the
Lord, the gate of heaven. Come after a
week of earthly cares, after so much
toil, after so many sorrows, after so
much pain. Rest your limbs. Regenerate
your spirit at the sources of grace.
Raise your mind to God; thank Him for
the benefits received through His
creation and in daily life; ask for
strength so you can win all of life’s
struggles, and be able to posses the
fruits of redemption.”

You’ll want to allow extra time for driving to morning Mass on Saturday
The Indianapolis Monumental Marathon foot race on Saturday, Nov. 4, will disrupt traffic patterns
throughout the city as far south as the general area near Holy Rosary and as far north as 66th Street and Col-
lege Avenue. In the area not too far from our church, some streets are expected to be closed between about
7:45 a.m. until around 8:45 a.m. While this will have no direct impact on streets immediately outside the
church, it could pose travelers some difficulty getting to Holy Rosary for Mass that morning. To view the
entire course map, visit www.monumentalmarathon.com.

A ll Saints Day is a Solemnity (high feast). To
understand this feast day it is important to un-
derstand what a saint is. There are two types of saints
in the Church. The word “saint” actually just means
“holy.” In this sense anyone who has been entirely
sanctified by God’s loving grace and is with Him in
heaven is a saint. The way we normally speak of the
saints refers to canonized* saints, those formally rec-
ognized by the Church.
All Saints Day celebrates not just those canonized
saints but all of those faithfully departed who have
received their eternal reward. It is a “catch-all” day.
It is also the day on which we as Christians are called
to reflect on our own noble call from God to be
saints. As we remember all of those who are in
heaven, we look not just to love and to admire them
but also to imitate them.
The Feast of All Souls dates back to the practices of
Benedictine monks in the sixth century. It is based on
the Church’s teaching that “all who die in God’s
grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified,
are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after
death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the
holiness necessary to enter the joy of
heaven” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1030).
The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final
purification of the elect, which is entirely different
from the punishment of the damned (CCC, No. 1031).
Even before the feast of All Souls developed, the
Church had begun the practice of praying for the dead.
In the fourth century St. John Chrysostom wrote:
Let us help and commemorate them (the dead). If
Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice,
why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead
bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to
help those who have died and to offer our prayers for
them (CCC, No. 1032).
Pope St. Gregory the Great in the sixth century of-
fered similar insight into the Church’s teaching on
Purgatory:
As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, be-
fore the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He
who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy
against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this
age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we un-
derstand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this
age, but certain others in the age to come (CCC, No.
1031).
This same teaching is repeated and reaffirmed in
the Second Council of Lyons (13th century), the
Council of Florence (15th century), the Council of
Trent (16th century) and in countless other magiste-
rial documents throughout history. For those who are
not perfected in this life, God continues to extend His
loving mercy into the next.
In this life we come to know the love of God
through the sacraments and prayer, but also through
the kindness, teaching, prayers and sacrifices of fel-
low Christians. When our brothers and sisters in
Christ are separated from us by death, our relation-
ship changes but does not end. Just as we help the
living by our prayers and sacrifices, God allows us to
continue to show the souls of the departed His love
in our prayers and sacrifices. The souls of the faith-
fully departed are made more open to God’s purify-
ing love through their experience of our intercession
on their behalf.
Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor
All Saints and All Souls days
* — A “canonized saint” is a saint who has gone through a formal process that recognizes not just the fact that they are
in heaven by God’s grace, but also that they cooperated so well with the grace of God in their earthly life that they are
worthy of imitation by us all.

NOVEMBER: MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS “From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for
them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.”

Be sure to assist your deceased loved ones by including them in our annual All Souls Remem-
brance. Write their names on one of the envelopes available at the St. Joseph Altar — an offering
is optional. We will place these envelopes on our high altar throughout the month of November. Purgatory, Gustav Dore
