Warning: this article contains spoilers for Transformers OneAs the latest film in the long-running franchise, Transformers One is a reintroduction to the world and characters in the Transformers universe, telling a story that so far has not been seen on the big screen. Transformers One received rave reviews from both critics and audiences, owing in part to the compelling story it told for Megatron and Optimus Prime. The movie takes the series back to its roots, showing the origin of the Transformers One cast's two lead characters, Optimus Prime and Megatron, and how their initial friendship gives way to their bitter rivalry.

Transformers One introduces many classic Autobots and Decepticons, some of whom haven't been seen on the silver screen until now. One of these characters is Alpha Trion, the Transformer who was responsible for the creation of Optimus Prime in the original cartoon, who now serves as the catalyst for both Optimus Prime and Megatron's creation in Transformers One. However, the film makes an interesting change to the character, allowing him to transform into a lion, something that most Transformers aren't able to do.
Alpha Trion Is Not A Maximal In Transformers Lore
He Is Depicted As A Normal Transformer

In 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, The Maximals first appeared on the big screen as descendants of the original Transformers that were able to turn into these animal-based alt modes instead of the usually seen vehicles. Alpha Trion, however, has never been depicted as one, instead appearing as a classic Transformer alongside the likes of Optimus Prime and Megatron. The Maximals are a much more advanced version of the Transformers, and, seeing as Alpha Trion is one of Transformers One's Elder Primes, he would have been one of the very first Transformers.
In the Transformers comics, Alpha Trion was briefly seen in a lion form, but that was only when he was a vision in the mind of another character.

There is a precedent for Transformers that aren't fully Maximals to turn into animal forms, and they have existed since the beginning of the series. In the original G1 cartoon and in Beast Wars, the Predacons were Transformers that could into animal forms similar to Alpha Trion in Transformers One, though they were Decepticons.. While the Maximals are partly organic creatures, Alpha Trion is shown to remain fully robotic when he transforms, a clear indication he is a Transformer distinct from the Maximals.
Alpha Trion's Lion Alt Mode In Transformers One Connects To Scrapped Toy Ideas
There Was A Version Of The Character Who Did
There have been a huge number of Transformers toys over the years, and as such there have been hundreds of different variations on the most well-known characters that have been made. Alpha Trion's lion transformation in Transformers One didn't come out of nowhere, as it had its basis in a planned toy that was going to feature a version of the character that could transform into a lion. This toy never made it to retail, and as such the concept of Alpha Trion having a lion alt mode went unused.

Bringing such an obscure reference to the film shows how much care the creators put into every detail of the film.
The lion alt form Alpha Trion toy was from around 2001, and as such the concept had been dormant for quite some time. In 2016, there was an Alpha Trion toy with a lion form that was released, which itself was a direct reference to the 2001 toy that never came out. However, the form was never the standard, and so bringing such an obscure reference to the film shows how much care the creators put into every detail of the film, which is absolutely a reason that Transformers One has such high review scores.

Transformers One's potential sequels could go in many different directions, but no matter what story the filmmakers might decide to develop, there will likely be more characters from the overarching Transformers canon brought into the new series. Despite its box office stumbles, Rise of the Beasts' introduction of the Maximals to the mainstream film franchise has integrated those Transformers more into public consciousness, and bringing them back for a sequel to Transformers One would be a great way to continue to get audiences interested in them.

Alpha Trion's shown ability to transform into a lion could easily be a precursor to having the Maximals appear themselves in a Transformers One sequel. It is a natural progression of both the story and the world itself, where an Elder Prime that can transform into an animal gives way to a group of Transformers who gain the ability to transform into animal forms. Adding the Maximals in a way that pays homage to Alpha Trion would also be great for ensuring the character's presence is still felt despite his death in Transformers One.
